Insects in log homes

Ants and Log Homes don't mix.

Wasps

Log Home Chinking and INSECTS!

Carpenter Ants!

Though it might be wasps, termites or some other nasty intruder, we identified this problem earlier as an invasion of Carpenter Ants that took advantage of this Log Home owner's chinking having first lost adhesion, separating from the logs. All because some contractor FAILED to use a backer rod on his chinking job for this Log Home. Note: In the first place, had the contractor applied a borate and glycol to these logs when they were being stacked, this insect problem would have never occurred.

Deal with the Ant colony

The first step should be quite obvious. We are going to deal with this Ant colony. And it turned out to be a real big one. But, it is important to note: The home owner conducted regular inspections and while he was away on a vacation........

  Serious bug killer

Between all the cracks where chinking has separated, we inject some very serious bug killer and stand back. We might even have to drill a few holes to get at them.

A hands on Log Home owner. We turned him loose with our chemicals and he sprayed down the entire outside corner of his Ant infestation.

After injection of bug killing agents, we cut out small sections of sealant from compression check on the bottom of certain logs. This affords a quick relief of Ants nests and the fumes from our pesticide.

Well, one Ant came out. Looks like another Queen. The rest must be right behind. And they were.....

(The camera got a little shaky here because we know what is now going to take place)

This was real disgusting! What you see in this picture is many thousands of Ants vacating the premises. The white stuff is log fiber which the Ants had chewed up.

A loner. This one showed up for it's Internet debut. The thing must have been at least 1" long. You Do Not want this to happen to your Log Home because some contractor, at your expense, took short cuts.

Now that our Ants are toast, we are injecting a borate powder in all areas where chinking failed. The borate will stop any insect from setting up house keeping in the future.

Here and at this joint, it is necessary that we install backer rod before sealing.

Above, this is high end insect and weather proofing for saddle notch Swedish cope log ends. One other less expensive professional procedure is available to treat the same log problem.
